Satsang - Spiritual Progress

The Hindu religion is a living force. Its uniqueness lies in its being based on the experience & spiritual realization of galaxy of sages & saints. They have built themselves on the firm foundation of the law of righteousness.

The different paths of approach to God’s kingdom when practised will enable a person to cultivate himself to a higher level & reach God. The law spells out chaster of duties in the daily life of man to achieve a spiritual progress. In recent years, we have had divine representatives like Ramakrishna, Vivekananda & others who had vision of God.

One among such luminaries of the past was ‘Shankara’ who appeared when the conditions in India were in confusion & he acted as a unifying force. A philosopher, poet, mystic, & a missionary, Shankara inspired the men of his days, urging them to their duties. He did not confine himself to only philosophy, but asked men to cultivate devotion. He explains that the texts, which one has read & mastered, the skills that one has acquired & the sciences learnt will not stand by a person, when he is at the death’s door.

“Save yourself supplicating to lord Govinda” he adds. The system he taught says that God is the sole reality. He stresses on how a satsang leads man to spiritual progress. He says,

"A pious company or satsang helps in spiritual progress, through which he can attain salvation."

A man by acquiring these austerities can reach to a position of ‘knowing self’ and realizes himself. Shankara says,

"At last he comes to know about reality. In this way Man having pious company attains spiritual progress in life.

In Bhagavadgita, lord Krishna, explains to Arjuna, “the role of constant practice in the realm of devotion & mind control.” ie. ‘practice & renunciation.’
This in turn can be achieved by ever being in the company of pious devotees.
